Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale, AZ, is popular with hikers, rock climbers, and tourists. The profile of this mountain resembles a kneeling camel and so locals named it “camelback.” During the 1800s, this area was an Indian reservation. Since 1968, the mountain has been part of a natural preserve and park. Approximately 2700 feet high, Camelback Mountain has steep trails to the top where visitors can enjoy a full city view of Phoenix and Scottsdale. The camel’s “head” is made with jagged red sandstone while the “back” is composed of granite. The beautiful desert landscape includes many native scrub bushes, cacti, and trees as well as numerous animals such as desert rabbits, lizards, roadrunners, and rattlesnakes. Camelback Mountain is situated inside Echo Canyon Recreation Area and offers free admission and free parking. The park is located in northeastern Phoenix and is bordered by Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. Nearby in Scottsdale are many resorts, spas, and upscale dining.
